I fell in love with this song when I heard it initially. I opened another message in my inbox, embedded with a track or press photos or write ups or silly colorful messages with all different fonts- this time linked to a gem of a track, sibling duo Starar’s Renegade Heart. The truth is I played it on repeat a couple times, mesmerized by the instruments and harmonies, and unexpected quirks. The lead in to the chorus is like running into a different atmosphere and feeling your body adjust. But I have to say, when I dug deeper and explored their social media presence, read their write-ups, and watched their music videos, I found myself confused and slightly disconcerted. The rhetoric in their write-ups was all very “they sound like Haim”, which these days feels like a ploy for rotations, and their music video was like a bad 90s country video, or even worse, folk video. I can’t decide if I appreciate their misguided persona or am just intrigued. Maybe it’s just they’re just the right amount of weird. Let me know what you think.
