I write this in a cafe next door to the meatpie shop on 1st street where I last saw Valerie, and Valerie Teicher, aka Tei Shi, has undergone quite a transformation since then. Following a successful debut EP and a collaboration with Glass Animals, the songstress has bleached her hair and crafted a stunning new track featuring her own production along with Yellerkin’s Luca Buccelatti and mixing from Patrick Wimbelry (Chairlift). This is exciting in so many ways- not only are we watching an artist refine her craft and grow (it’s amazing to feel that the best is still to come), but we are also hearing Wimberly’s fingerprints are all over this track- he has imbued his sensibility. It feels as though he has found a new muse, a new vessel for his avant garde pop. Meanwhile, Tei Shi comes back sexier and more polished. Blonde and ambitious, this track is anything but ditzy- it’s the intro to a sexy thriller, the climax of a woman awakened and yet misled, demanding accountability.
